Marijuana Addiction
After alcohol, marijuana is the most commonly used drug in Canada. The legalization of marijuana in Canada has normalized the use of the drug, without proper education on its harmful effects. The result has been a large increase in use, to dependancy, to marijuana addiction.
Despite the rising popularity and opinion of the therapeutic value and perceived safety of cannabis, many Canadians are struggling with marijuana addiction without understanding the severity it can have, or the costs associated with it.
Under the influence of marijuana, users are more prone to accidents and are at much greater risk of experiencing mental health issues, in some cases permanently. These can include depression, anxiety, paranoia, panic attacks, delusions of grandeur, to psychotic episodes that result in hospitalization. This is why proper education around cannabis use and addiction are so important. Furthermore why individualized treatment programs are crucial to combat stigma, and properly educate the user. That’s where we come in.
Things You May Not Know About Marijuana Use
- 9% of Marijuana users are addicted to it
- Marijuana use affects you for 72 hours on average after use. This means if you drive within 3 days of smoking, you are technically driving under the influence. The same applies to going to work, or school
- Marijuana use has been linked to cancer, and accidental death from people driving under the influence. This means people have died directly as a result of marijuana use
- THC can stay in your system for up to 9 months after use as it is stored in your fat cells
- There is a strong correlation to marijuana use and mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, bi-polar, borderline personality disorder, psychosis, and schizophrenia
- Marijuana cultivation is still very unregulated, so unlike alcohol products with a percentage on the label, most people have no idea how strong the drug they’re using really is
Signs of Marijuana Addiction
