12 Step Programs

12 step programs are fellowships of people who share their experience with each other to recover from various forms of addiction. They are one of the most successful, and widely known self support programs in the world. These meetings are readily available, easily accessible and at no cost. The most well known 12 step fellowship is Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) ©.

Millions of people worldwide use a 12 step program by adopting a set of principles known as the 12 Steps, typically being guided by a sponsor. A sponsor is someone who “has what you want” referring to their quality of life, and has gone through all 12 steps and lives by the principles. By following the steps, many people have been able to maintain abstinence from both substance and behavioural addictions. The bonds created and lessons learned from 12 step meetings can make a lifelong impact, offering very powerful and meaningful support.

12 step

As per their traditions, 12 step groups are not affiliated with any outside organizations, which includes us. Another Road is not a 12 step fellowship, or program. However we do have a variety of 12 step programs readily available so that our clients can find the best support options for them. 12 step meetings are held in our centre, and we take our clients to outside meetings weekly if they so choose.

We don’t force anyone to do the 12 steps. We provide an introduction to them, along with other self help recovery modules such as SMART, Refuge, and Dharma recovery. In addition to this we provide various therapeutic approaches, and wellness practices to create a holistic program.

The 12 Steps

  1. We admitted we were powerless over our addiction – that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore use to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

How We Can Help

Our team of experienced counsellors work with clients daily to guide and support them as they go through every phase of their recovery. We offer a home like environment to encourage growth and comfort while learning. We'll introduce them to the 12 steps and various other self help modules to find something that works for them. Our program helps individuals identify triggers, work through grief and trauma, manage their impulses and emotions, improve self-esteem, and open the door to rebuilding relationships. Having a low staff to client ratio, we provide very substantial 1 on 1 time with our therapists, which we feel is necessary for a successful recovery.  Lastly, Another Road offers an Alumni program that ensures a means for clients to stay focused and connected on their recovery after completing their residential treatment. Think our program might be a good fit?
