Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that is very effective in treating drug and alcohol addiction. The main reason being that it examines the relationship between a persons thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. How many times have you heard someone say they didn’t know why they acted a certain way, or they couldn’t explain how their thoughts lead them to certain behaviours? Or that they couldn’t explain how they felt, or how their feelings affected them?

Being unable to answer these questions can often lead to self-defeating actions driven by negative thoughts or feelings that prevent personal growth. Negative cycles like this can cause many mental health problems including anxiety, depression, and addiction. The powerlessness and lack of control over these patterns becomes a powerful contributor to addiction.

This is where cognitive behavioural therapy comes in. CBT can help clients understand and address these negative patterns and replace them with healthier ones to incorporate into a life in recovery. Our team of clinical psychotherapists will explore the relationship between the three with you, and help you better understand you.

How CBT Works

In its foundation, cognitive behavioural therapy is actually quite simple. As you can see by the diagram, the focus of CBT sessions is to examine the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours (in no particular order). For example in a 1 on 1 session you have with a therapist, you can explain to them a situation where you feel like you lost control. How did you behave? What thoughts were going through your mind before or during the event? How did it make you feel?

Examining multiple scenarios with professional guidance can help you further understand yourself, and your patterns so that you can change them to how you want them to be. As humans we have control over our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. However when we’re in the throws of addiction, this couldn’t feel more far from the truth.
